There Is No 'One Rittal Enclosure'

Scenario 1: Dry Indoor Network Closet (RAL 7035 Is Usually Enough)

If the enclosure sits in an air-conditioned office closet or a clean part of a plant, a standard Rittal enclosure in RAL 7035 is often the sensible choice. RAL 7035 is the light gray powder-coat finish you see on most industrial panels. It's not a rating. But for a dry environment, it looks professional and it holds up fine.

For a small network setup, I'd get a Rittal wall-mount enclosure with 19-inch rails, a fan/filter kit, and a plain door. Put a switch, patch panel, and router in it. If you want to see the status LEDs without opening the door, add a window—but keep in mind windows add cost and don't help with heat. I'd skip it unless your team actually uses it.

Honestly, I'm not sure why the industry settled on RAL 7035 as the default gray. My best guess is it hides dust better than pure white and doesn't show scuffs as much as darker colors. Whatever the reason, it's what you'll see on most Rittal indoor cabinets.

One honest caveat: for a truly dry indoor room, a NEMA 4X enclosure is overkill. People overshoot because 'industrial' sounds like it requires armored everything. It doesn't. I once ordered a sealed cabinet for a small network device because I thought 'sealed = protected.' That switch rebooting at 2 a.m. proved me wrong. Rittal makes climate control units for these cabinets, but that's a separate part and a separate conversation. If the device inside is a simple sensor or actuator, fine. If it's generating heat, plan for it.

Scenario 3: Coastal or Chemical Environments (Go Stainless, Ideally 316L)

Salt air is a different animal. A powder-coated RAL 7035 enclosure near the ocean will look fine at first. Then it won't. I still kick myself for not pushing back on a coastal project years ago. We used painted cabinets to save money, and about eight months later the hinges started to corrode and the paint was lifting around the door seals. The cost of replacing them far outweighed the upfront savings.

For coastal spots or chemical exposure, buy a Rittal NEMA 4X enclosure in stainless steel. For heavy chlorine exposure or salt spray, I'd try to get 316L rather than 304. I want to say 304 is fine for most inland washdown applications, but don't quote me on that—check the material spec against the actual chemical. This is also the scenario where I tell people to look at the whole system, not just the box. If the enclosure sits in direct sun, it will absorb heat. Add a shade, choose a light color if the manufacturer offers it, or include an enclosure air conditioner.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Also, check whether the panel needs to be UL 508A listed. If it does, the enclosure itself is part of a larger assembly. You'll likely have it built by a panel shop, not bought off the shelf and wired by whoever's around. That changes the conversation—you'll give the panel builder the Rittal part number and let them handle the listing.
