The first thing I do with any enclosure is close the door. Not inspect the door—close it. The most common failure I see in custom equivalents is the gasket.
A NEMA 4 enclosure is only as good as the seal between door and body. If the gasket isn’t compressed evenly, you get channels for water to sneak into a live panel. In washdown or food processing environments, that’s not a minor issue. That’s a line stoppage.
Rittal uses a continuous, poured-in-place gasket on most of its NEMA 4 wallmounts. I’ve measured door gaps on a 600 mm Rittal cabinet: less than 1 mm variation around the perimeter. The tolerance on that spec was ±0.8 mm, and they stayed inside it.

I’m not a metallurgist, so I can’t speak to grain structure. What I can tell you from a quality manager’s seat is that material thickness and finish consistency are the easiest things to fake on paper and the hardest to argue about after the fact.
Rittal publishes material specifications for each SKU. On stainless steel 4X units, the material is typically 304, and the surface finish is consistent enough that washdown doesn’t leave stains. On painted carbon steel units, the powder coat covers edges—not just flat surfaces. Those details matter when the cabinet sits in a plant for 10 years.
I once got a “build to equal” quote with the line “similar to Rittal 2780 wallmount.” The thing that showed up had 20-gauge walls, a mounting plate that didn’t fit, and paint that chipped when we opened a knock-out. Dimension 3: Certification and Traceability
This is where I’ve become the annoying person on procurement calls. I’ve learned to ask “what’s NOT included” before I ask “what’s the price.” And for enclosures, I ask: “Can you send the UL file number and the NEMA listing for this exact model?”
Rittal publishes downloadable certificates, UL/CSA listings, and CAD files for most items on rittal.com and through Rittal US. I can pull up a specific part, verify its Type 4 rating, and check the standard edition. That traceability is the real blue chip value. It means when an auditor asks, “Is this enclosure Type 4?” you don’t have to say “I think so.”
Custom fabricators can hold valid UL certifications too. I’m not saying they don’t. What I’m saying is that I’ve seen too many quotes that say “NEMA 4 equivalent” and then the only document available is a letter from the owner saying, “We’ve been building these for 20 years.” That’s not a certification. It’s a story. Sometimes it’s a good story, but it’s not a file.

That’s an 81% premium. But the comparison isn’t finished until you add the cost of verifying, reworking, or replacing the enclosure after failure.
In 2023, a client had a “budget” NEMA 4 enclosure fail during a line washdown. The total damage came to $22,000: replacement enclosure, panel builders’ overtime, missed production window, and water-damaged contactors. The original quote was $350 cheaper than Rittal. The final invoice was $22,000 more than the cheap price.
Before you say “that’s just one bad vendor,” consider the distribution of outcomes. A custom box might be fine 80% of the time. When it’s not fine, the failure cost overwhelms the upfront savings. With a Rittal box, you’re paying a premium to move the probability of surprise closer to zero. I can’t promise zero failures—nobody can—but I can promise better documentation and more consistent manufacturing.
Which One Should You Choose?
My practical rule, not a sales pitch:
- Choose Rittal when the enclosure will be washed down, exposed to weather, or inspected by a third party. Choose it when you don’t have an in-house lab to verify gasket compression, material thickness, and grounding continuity on every unit.
- Consider custom when the application is truly non-critical, the volume justifies a formal test program, and you have engineering resources to audit the fabricator and first article. Be honest about whether your team actually does that. (more often than not, the answer is no)
If I had to put it in one line: buy the Rittal NEMA 4 when you need the rating to be true, not just claimed. The extra money is paying for verification. Verification is cheap compared to a shutdown, a failed audit, or a customer who stops trusting you.
Prices and standards change, so check the current Rittal US website and the latest edition of NEMA 250 before locking in a spec. But don’t wait for a failure to learn the difference between a certification and a quote.
