When Your Rack Decision Almost Cost Us Our Network Upgrade

The Project That Started Innocently Enough

Back in early 2024, our operations manager dropped a bombshell: we needed to upgrade our core network switches. The current setup—aging Cisco gear stacked on a couple of open shelves in the server closet—was becoming a reliability risk. The decision to upgrade was easy. The delivery method? That's where I got pulled in.

I went back and forth between the N93 series and a standard TS rack for maybe two weeks. The TS rack had a lower upfront cost and was in stock at a major distributor. But the N93 offered integrated climate control and busbar options that our electrician said would simplify the install. Ultimately, I chose the N93 because our tech team was worried about heat buildup in that tight closet, and retrofitting cooling later would be more expensive. Or so I hoped.

The Busbar Dilemma

Then came the Rittal busbar. Our network switches needed reliable power distribution, and the electrician recommended a busbar system instead of individual power strips. “Better load balancing,” he said. “And cleaner for future expansion.”

I started pricing out the Rittal busbar kits. The component list was longer than I expected: trunking, taps, adapter modules, end caps. Not cheap. Not complicated to order, but expensive. I sat at my desk comparing the busbar cost against a standard PDU (power distribution unit) setup. The busbar was about 40% more. But the electrician insisted that the install time would be halved, and the reliability was better for 24/7 operation.

Post-Installation Doubt… Then Relief

After the install, I kept second-guessing. What if the standard TS rack with a PDU would have been fine? The extra cost was eating at me. Had I over-engineered for a simple switch upgrade? The two weeks after go-live were stressful. I'd walk by the server closet and listen for fan noise. (Internal joke: admin with unnecessary anxiety over enclosure specs.)

Then, three weeks in, we had a minor power flicker. The building's UPS kicked in, the switches stayed up, and the busbar system handled the load without a hiccup. Our network team reported zero issues. Exactly what we needed.

So glad I went with the busbar. Almost cheaped out and regretted it. Dodged a bullet, even if the install wasn't perfect.

What I Learned (The Hard Way)

Looking back, here's what I'd tell any admin facing a similar rack decision:

  • Get your tech team's input early. I assumed an enclosure was just a box. It's not. The series choice (N93 vs. TS) affects cabling, cooling, and future expansion.
  • Factor in installation time. The cost of the rack is only half the equation. If your electrician isn't familiar with Rittal's system, budget for extra labor.
  • Busbars aren't cheap, but they're future-proof. If you're upgrading switches anyway, the busbar investment pays off when you add more power-hungry gear later.
  • Trust but verify vendor claims. I assumed the busbar would save install time. It didn't—in our case. But the operational reliability is worth it.

Would I pick the Rittal N93 again? Yes. But I'd be more realistic about the timeline and budget. The fundamentals of racking—protection, cooling, power distribution—haven't changed. But the execution? It's evolved a lot from 2020. That old shelf setup is long gone. And I'm glad we upgraded when we did.
