What Is a Connector? What I Learned Ordering Rittal Cable Clamps

Just so nobody has to read 1,500 words to get the answer: a connector is the part that joins a cable to a device or to another cable—an RJ45 Ethernet plug, an RJ11 phone plug, a terminal block. A Rittal cable clamp is the part that anchors a cable where it enters an enclosure, so the connector sits in a clean, dry, protected space. Different jobs, different parts. When you're buying cable clamps, check bore size and protection rating before you check price.

A $46 mistake that really cost $1,300

I'm an office administrator, not an engineer. Since 2021 I've handled purchasing for a small telecom company—roughly 70 orders a year for enclosures, cable entry hardware, climate accessories, and the occasional request that starts with 'hey, can you find…' I'm also the person who had to look up 'what is a connector' in my first week, so I'm writing this for whoever inherits a parts list without an engineering degree.

I had called the supplier before ordering to ask if the clamps were compatible with Rittal enclosures. They said yes. The word 'compatible' meant the thread fit. I meant whether it would preserve the cabinet's IP66 rating. Same word, two meanings—and that mismatch cost roughly $1,300 in Saturday labor, expedited shipping, and the genuine clamps we should have ordered the first time. What I mean is, my $93 'savings' turned into a lesson that finance still remembers.

So, what is a connector and what isn't?

A connector is any component that creates a separable electrical or optical link. An RJ45 jack, an RJ11 plug for phones, a USB port on a controller, a terminal block—all connectors. They join circuits and let you disconnect them again when needed.

A cable clamp is not that. A cable clamp does not join circuits. It anchors the cable where it passes through an enclosure wall, absorbs the pull, and seals the opening. If the clamp fails, the enclosure's protection rating drops, and then the connectors inside—the ones carrying data, voice, or power—become the victims. One bad clamp can take down a cabinet full of equipment that was perfectly fine when it left the shop.

That's why I appreciate that the Rittal company designs enclosures, cable entry parts, climate control, and power distribution as an integrated system rather than a list of independent parts. If you can compare drawings up front, you don't guess.

How I order Rittal cable clamps now

I don't read datasheets for fun, but I've learned to check five things before placing a clamp order:

  • Enclosure series and rating. If the box is rated IP66, the clamp has to match. The opening is part of the enclosure wall.
  • Actual cable outer diameter. Measure the jacket, not the wire gauge. That's where our 7.1 mm figure came from.
  • Seal compression range. A 4–6 mm seal will not do the job on a 7.1 mm cable, even if it looks like it fits.
  • Material and environment. Outdoor UV, chemicals, and temperature swings rule out some plastics. Check what the manufacturer specifies for the application.
  • Compliance documents. When customers require UL, IEC, or specific test reports, confirm them before you order, not after an audit flags the install.

Why does the clamp rating matter? Because if the cabinet is IP66 and the clamp is not, the assembled cabinet is not IP66 anymore. That idea did not make sense to me until water was already inside. Put another way: the lowest-priced clamp can compromise the most expensive enclosure on your project.

The sticker price is not the point. The total cost, including the Saturday I never want to repeat, is the point.

When the cheaper option is actually fine

If you have read this far expecting 'never buy anything but the exact Rittal part,' that's not my argument. I have ordered generic cable clamps for internal panels where the enclosure is not exposed to weather and the cable diameter sits comfortably inside the seal's range. That worked fine.

The difference is who makes the substitution decision. In my company, an engineer with a caliper and the spec sheet approves an equivalent product. I do not make that call alone because I am the person who once thought 'clamp is a clamp.' If you are the buyer and nobody with electrical training is reviewing your substitutions, order what the BOM says. The few dollars you save on a small part will not feel worth it when you are the person who guessed wrong.

That's the honest boundary of my advice. I can tell you what a connector is, why Rittal cable clamps earn their price, and what 7.1 mm meant on our order. I cannot promise every substitute is safe, because that depends on the enclosure, the cable, and the environment. Some substitutions are fine. Just not the ones made on price alone.
