Generic is acceptable when...

It's an indoor, climate-controlled, low-interference environment—a wiring cabinet that sits untouched for three years and then gets decommissioned. I have two budget suppliers I trust for exactly that scenario.

If your budget forces generic everywhere...

Use a local supplier who can show you physical units, verify compliance documents upfront, and build a buffer of spare parts. But plan a Rittal line item into the next budget cycle.

As of February 2025, I'm paying roughly $520–620 for a typical 600×800mm Rittal wall-mount enclosure from our distributor, depending on options (verify current pricing; Rittal publishes list prices but distributors apply project-based discounts). The equivalent generic runs $310–380. The $210 gap is, in my experience, the cheapest insurance we buy.

Enclosure procurement has less to do with unit prices and more to do with predictability—the certainty that what you order is what you get, and that the paperwork will survive an audit.
