Rittal Outdoor Enclosure Quote: A 6-Step Cost Audit Before You Approve It

About a year ago, I almost approved a quote for a Rittal outdoor enclosure that looked great on price. The number was inside our budget, the delivery date worked, and the vendor said it was 'the model we always use.' Then I checked the heat load from the power supply going inside. The quote didn't include a fan/filter unit, a cable entry plate, or the mounting brackets. The real cost was about $700 higher than the quote.

I manage the enclosure and climate-control budget for a mid-sized industrial company, and I've tracked every enclosure order in a cost system for six years. That spreadsheet is what made me stop trusting list prices.

Since then, I've built a six-step checklist that I use before every Rittal outdoor enclosure order. It's not a sales pitch. It's basically the same cost audit I run on any capital equipment: total cost, not list price.

Step 1: Confirm the exact part number, not the model family

Rittal has a lot of outdoor enclosures. A quote line that says '2660 Flip' doesn't tell you the material, IP rating, or UL Type. Those details matter when the enclosure is sitting outside in rain, sun, and salt air. According to NEMA 250 (nema.org), Type 4X is intended for indoor or outdoor use and includes corrosion protection. But 'intended for outdoor use' still depends on the specific part number and its gaskets, latches, and finish.

Call Rittal tech support before you approve anything. It's free, and it's generally fast. Ask them to confirm:

  • IP rating and UL Type
  • Material and corrosion resistance
  • Operating temperature range
  • Whether the part number includes mounting hardware

Checkpoint: the part number on the quote should match the part number on the Rittal drawing. If the vendor says 'it's basically the same,' get it in writing. A part-number mismatch is a deal-breaker for me.

Step 2: Calculate heat load before picking climate control

The enclosure doesn't create heat. The equipment inside creates heat. If that equipment is a power supply, it's usually the biggest heat source in the box. Don't just ask 'will it fit?' Ask for the power supply's heat dissipation in watts, not just its output wattage.

Here's a quick example. A 500 W power supply running at 90% efficiency produces about 56 W of waste heat. At 75% efficiency, that jumps to about 167 W. Same output, three times more heat. That changes the type and size of climate control you need.

Use the heat load number, the outdoor ambient temperature, and the enclosure dimensions. Rittal tech support can help with that calculation, but they need a number to work from. If a vendor says 'the outdoor enclosure should be fine,' ask for the calculation. If there's no calculation, there isn't a recommendation.

Checkpoint: the quote should show the heat load in watts and the model of filter fan or cooling unit. If neither is there, send it back.

Step 3: List every non-enclosure item on the BOM

This is the step I skipped for years. A Rittal outdoor enclosure quote might include only the empty box. The actual installation needs gland plates, filter fans, a small heater for condensation, mounting brackets, lifting eyes, door stops, and grounding kits. None of those are automatically included.

I call this the BOM test. If the quote doesn't have a detailed bill of materials, it's not a complete quote. It's a starting point.

This is also where a '2660 Flip' label gets tricky. The name may describe a physical configuration, but the quote can still exclude the mounting accessories or the cable entry plate needed to route power into it. Check the full BOM, not the photo.

Checkpoint: the BOM should include every line item needed to mount, protect, and energize the enclosure.

Step 4: Put freight and delivery into the comparison

Outdoor enclosures aren't small. They ship freight, and freight costs change the math.

Suppose Vendor A quotes $1,850 with free freight. Vendor B quotes $1,550 plus $420 freight and a $65 liftgate charge. Vendor B is still cheaper, but only by about $185, not $300. A lot of quote comparisons stop at the price before freight, and that's a mistake.

Add receiving time too. If the enclosure arrives without a liftgate, you'll pay someone else to unload it. Add the cost of moving it to the install location. Those are real budget lines.

Step 5: Estimate installation and service access

The lowest enclosure price doesn't matter if installation takes twice as long as expected. Ask the installer how they'll service it. What if a filter fan needs replacement in two years? Can they reach it without a ladder? Is the service access on the right side for the space you have?

Once the labor hours are on the sheet, the more expensive enclosure can become the no-brainer. I've seen quotes that saved $300 on the box and added $2,400 in labor because the enclosure orientation didn't match the building. That's not an enclosure problem. It's a planning problem.

Step 6: Build a maintenance and spare parts line

Outdoor enclosures work. Filters get dirty. Gaskets age. Fans fail. Heaters cycle. If the site has salt air or heavy rain, the maintenance estimate matters even more.

Ask Rittal tech support for the spare parts list and service interval guidance. Check that the filter mats and fan spares are available through your distributor, not just through a special order. Then put one line in the budget for annual maintenance and one line for expected spare parts. It's not exciting, but it keeps the next quote honest.

What I'd avoid

Don't compare an enclosure to a chip. I sometimes see search phrases like '2660 Flip vs Broadcom,' and that's a category confusion. Broadcom makes processors and connectivity components. Rittal makes the enclosure that protects them. They're not alternatives. You need both.

To be fair, low quotes can be legitimate. The problem isn't that the quote is low. The problem is when the quote is incomplete and you find out later.

Don't assume Rittal tech support is only for engineers. I call them for part number checks and BOM questions. It saves more time than it costs.

And don't skip the maintenance estimate because it makes the purchase look worse. It's a budget line, not a criticism. The buyer who skips it gets to explain an unexpected repair later. More often than not, the skipped line is the one that shows up on the variance report.
