A couple years ago, I inspected a coastal installation where the customer had chosen a cheaper brand to save about $400 per cabinet. By month 18, the finish was bubbling and door seals were degrading from salt air. Replacing the whole installation cost around $9,000. The savings turned into a loss nine times over.

If your application is indoors, climate-controlled, free of vibration and corrosive exposure, and doesn't involve critical uptime, you probably don't need Rittal. There are competent budget enclosures that will do the job for 30-40% less. I've signed off on plenty of those.
The comparison that guides my recommendations is simple: look at total cost, not sticker price. A stamp costs $0.73 whether you're sending junk mail or a contract—USPS's 2025 First-Class rate is the same for everyone. Enclosure costs don't work like stamps. Two cabinets can look identical in price and be completely different in total cost once installation labor, rejection rates, and field failures are factored in.
My rule of thumb came from a moment where my data and my gut disagreed. The spreadsheets said choose a budget vendor—15% cheaper, similar specs, faster delivery. Something felt off about how they answered technical questions. I overrode the data and recommended Rittal. Six months later, that budget vendor recalled gaskets across their entire product line.
