Before You Open the Catalogue
If you're here, you're probably the person who got told "we need a Rittal server cabinet" and is now wondering how deep the Rittal panel enclosure catalogue really goes. I get that. Step 1: Measure Everything First
I know "measure the space first" sounds insultingly obvious. But when a vendor's first question is "what depth do you need?" and your architect's drawing is missing the aisle width, the most tempting answer is "standard." There's no such thing. A six-foot rack that works in a warehouse might not fit your server room.
Get four numbers before you talk to any vendor: the floor footprint, the ceiling height, the front door swing clearance, and the rear access space. We once received a cabinet that fit the footprint perfectly but couldn't open its rear door more than 40 degrees because of a roof support column. We had ordered without checking the aisle clearance. That was an awkward afternoon. Actually, it was an awkward two weeks, because the correct cabinet took that long to arrive.
Write the numbers on a sticky note. You'll need them in Step 4.
Step 2: List the Actual Equipment Going Inside
You need model numbers, not vibes. The depth of a server matters, and so does the depth of your network switches—especially if you're dealing with the perennial switches vs cisco switches question. Switch ports exit from different places depending on the line, and that changes how much vertical space you lose to cable trays.
My rule: add 20% more U capacity than the initial count. The project in our 2024 infrastructure refresh that "only needed 8U" grew to 14U in eleven months. (Should mention: we ended up ordering a second, smaller enclosure for the overflow. My IT lead still brings it up at quarterly reviews.)

Rittal offers fan-and-filter units, heat exchangers, and air conditioners. The fan-and-filter route is the cheapest option, and it's fine for modest loads. It is not fine for a full cabinet in a warm room.
We skipped the heat estimate once because the IT lead said "it'll be fine." It wasn't. A GPU server started thermal-throttling during a July heatwave, and the monitoring alert fired at 3 AM. The overnight service call, the portable AC rental, and the replacement cooling unit set us back roughly the price of a decent chassis. I believed in heat-load math after that. I believe in it now, too.
If you'd rather not do the arithmetic, ask the distributor. Most good ones have engineers who'll run the load for you. That's their job—use it.
Step 4: Verify the Part Number Against the Current PDF
The Rittal panel enclosure catalogue is a living document. The printed copy on my shelf was outdated within a year. Download the latest PDF from the Rittal website before you finalize any part number.
Here's my verification sequence:
- Search the part number directly in the current PDF, rather than browsing sections.
- Cross-check the depth and IP rating against my Step 1 numbers.
- Confirm the accessories—mounting rails, gland plates, cable brushes—are part of the same order or explicitly listed as separate line items.
- Email the distributor with the exact part number and ask them to confirm availability and compatibility before I send the PO.
That last step has saved me at least twice. Actually, three times. The third was a wall-mount enclosure where I "remembered" the door type from an old project. The part number was right; the door wasn't. The distributor caught it before shipping, and I stopped trusting my memory after that.
Also worth checking: the quote matches the PO. I once had a supplier submit an invoice under a different part number than the one on the PO, and finance flagged it. Three emails and a week later, it was resolved. You don't want to be the buyer who has to explain that to the CFO.
Step 5: Plan the Cable Management Before Committing
A cabinet is a box. Cables are where the chaos lives. If you're installing Cisco switches with high port density, forty-eight cables per switch need to reach the patch panels somehow without creating a mess. Vertical managers, rear mounting channels, and horizontal strain relief each occupy their own U-space.
In my opinion, cable management is the last place to cut a budget. A cabinet full of switches with no cable organization turns every intervention into a 15-minute guessing game, and the hardware gets blamed for what's really a planning gap. Rittal sells the accessories for this; use them.
Step 6: Pin Down a Guaranteed Delivery Date
This is the blood-pressure step. The quote says "ships in 2 weeks." Your deadline is three weeks out. That's fine if the date is real. Ask whether it's guaranteed or just estimated—they're not the same thing.
Anyone who orders print knows the rush drill: next-business-day production typically runs 50-100% above standard, and 2-3 day turnaround costs 25-50% more. I checked fee schedules from major online print houses in January 2025, and industrial cabinet expediting follows a similar curve. I've paid plenty of rush fees over the years, but I've never paid a rush fee that hurt as much as the project delay I ate in 2022 when a "probably on time" supplier showed up eleven days late.
Three questions to ask every vendor before you sign:
- Is the delivery date guaranteed, and what does the guarantee actually cover?
- Is the cabinet stocked in a regional warehouse, or does it ship from manufacturing?
- What's the price delta between standard and expedited freight?
I'd rather pay 15% more for a stocked Rittal cabinet from a regional warehouse than save 15% on a unit coming from overseas with a fuzzy shipping window. Paying extra for certainty is not a waste. What's a waste is paying for "probably."
Common Mistakes to Avoid
"The local vendor is always faster"
That belief comes from an era before modern logistics networks. A well-organized regional distributor who stocks the part will beat a local shop that has to order it anyway. I don't stay loyal to vendors; I stay loyal to delivery dates.
Assuming all 42U cabinets are the same
Two 42U Rittal racks can have different depths, weight capacities, and internal rail layouts. The part number is the spec. When you compare quotes, match part numbers, not product lines.
Forgetting to inspect the crate
If a cabinet arrives damaged, write it on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves and take photos. It feels awkward until the first time a door panel shows up dented. Then it feels like the most reasonable thing in the world.
Skipping the checklist for a "simple" order
A single cabinet seems too small to need a process. That's exactly when mistakes happen. The wrong cabinet costs you the unit price, the return freight, and the time—and it always arrives when your team is under deadline pressure. The checklist takes five minutes. The mistakes take five weeks.
