5 Steps to Order Rittal Cabinet Filters Without the Headache (I Learned the Hard Way)

Step 2: Match the Filter or Heat Exchanger to the Enclosure

Rittal has a compatibility matrix, but it's not always intuitive. For example, the SK 3241.300 filter fan is rated for AE enclosures up to 600mm wide. But if you're using a TS 8 enclosure, you need the SK 3301.100 instead. I didn't know that until I had 6 units sitting on a shelf, wrong for the job.

How to do this:

  • Find the filter or heat exchanger section. Look for "compatible enclosures" or "suitable for."

Step 3: Verify the IP Rating and Environmental Requirements

This is where most of my mistakes happened. You'd think IP54 means "protected against dust and splashing water." True. But NEMA 12 means "indoor use without dripping water." They're not the same. And if your enclosure is going in a network closet with a fire suppression system (which often uses dry chemicals or CO2), IP54 might be fine. But if it's outdoors, you probably need IP65 or NEMA 4.

Quick reference (based on Rittal's catalog and industry standards):

  • Indoor office network closet: IP54 or NEMA 12 is usually enough.
  • Outdoor or near high-pressure water: IP65 or NEMA 4.

Pro tip: If you're ordering for a network cabinet with Cisco switches (as many of my clients do), check the switch's datasheet for power dissipation. For a Catalyst 9300, it's about 400W. That needs a heat exchanger rated at least 1,400 BTU/h. Under-spec that, and the switch will throttle performance on hot days.

Step 5: Double-Check the Order Before Submitting

This is the step I wish I'd done every time. After three rejections in Q1 2024 (one wrong filter frame, one wrong voltage, one damaged in shipping because I didn't specify proper packaging), I created my pre-check list.
